Can you waive/ reduce PATATIENT’S copay or coinsurance
The simple answer is NO! When you submit a claim to insurance you agree to the terms of the insurance contract, or individual policy. In the agreed upon policy the patient has agreed upon their financial responsibility for care.
Medicare & Medicare consider it FRAUDULENT to waive or reduce the patients copayment or co-insurance.
As life exist for all of us, you may have a hardship case with a need for psychotherapy that you may wish to continuing seeing at a lower rate. Absent a true financial hardship that is properly documented in the patient’s healthcare record, providers must collect the full copayment or co-insurance.
As a business owner, you should have a predetermined number of pro bono cases you can satisfy on a weekly and/or monthly basis. This will allow you to service the community and allow you to meet your personal and professional financial obligations (office rent; home mortgage/ rent; liability insurance; student loans)
